200,000 KIDS … 200 CITIES … TWO SAFETY EXHIBITS ONE MESSAGE - ELIMINATE HOME INJURIES
Lowe's Doubles Home Safety Efforts by Creating a Second Great Safety Adventure Exhibit

WILKESBORO, N.C. - If injuries were a disease, children would be faced with an epidemic. Consider the following statistics from leading sources:

  • More children die each year from preventable injuries than from all childhood diseases combined1
  • Every five seconds, there is an injury in the home - that's 6.8 million injuries a year1
  • Approximately every 20 minutes, a person is killed by an injury suffered in the home1
  • Injuries are the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and younger in the U.S.2
However, 90 percent of home injuries can be prevented, IF children have the knowledge to stay out of harm's way.

To help make learning about home safety fun, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and Lowe's Home Safety Council last year created the Great Safety Adventure, an interactive exhibit to teach children basic life safety skills in the home. The first exhibit was a tremendous success, reaching more than 100,000 children and receiving accolades from parents and teachers alike. This year, Lowe's invested an additional $2.5 million to develop and build a second Great Safety Adventure exhibit, increasing its overall commitment to more than $5 million.

"Lowe's is passionate about helping parents and children prevent home injuries, and that's why we are doubling our home safety efforts in 2000," said David Oliver, executive director of Lowe's Home Safety Council. "Our research shows that 85 percent of parents want their children to be educated about home safety issues through school programs. Lowe's Great Safety Adventure is an answer to that call."

Two tractor-trailer trucks unfold to form Lowe's Great Safety Adventure, a 1,200-square foot virtual home complete with living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Rover, the home safety hound, greets children at the door as they begin a guided tour through this "field trip on wheels" to understand more about top hazards in the home, including: fire prevention; fall prevention; choking, suffocation and strangulation prevention; and poison prevention.

Combined, the exhibits will visit elementary schools, local events and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse stores in 200 cities across the U.S. within the next year, reaching more than 200,000 children.

"We commissioned the best and brightest creative minds to create both exhibits, which are measurably increasing children's knowledge about life-saving skills," said Oliver. "The creation of the second Great Safety Adventure enables us to educate and activate more children and families to create healthier and safer homes."

In 1993, Lowe's Companies Inc. founded Lowe's Home Safety Council with the vision of creating safer American homes.
